About The Book: In this book, Nivedita discussed on several topics of India, lives of Indians and Hindu people. She also discussed some of the aspects of Indian life such as the caste system, the role and position of women in society, the Indian (Vedic) concept of birth and death, Indian pilgrimages, the invasion of Islam in India, etc. The woman pausing in the dying light to salute the river brings us to another such instance. There is nothing occult in the passion of Hindus for the Ganges. It is interesting to see the difference between a temple and a church. The former may seem absurdly small, for theoretically it is simply a covered shrine which contains one or other of certain images or symbols, before which appropriate offerings are made and prescribed rituals performed by duly appointed priests. About The Author: Sister Nivedita (1867-1911), was an Irish teacher, author, social activist, school founder and disciple of Swami Vivekananda. She spent her childhood and early youth in Ireland. She was engaged to marry a Welsh youth, but he died soon after their engagement. Nivedita travelled to many places in India, including Kashmir, with Swami Vivekananda, Josephine MacLeod, and Sara Bull. This helped her in connecting to the Indian masses, Indian culture, and its history. Nivedita was planning to open a school for girls who were deprived of even basic education. She toured England and America on a lecture tour designed to raise money to establish a girls school.
